Our Brazilian Roots

Our story began generations ago, when our grandparents brought their Italian heritage to the fertile mountains of southern Minas Gerais, Brazil, laying the foundation for a lasting family legacy. Today, Uai Coffee proudly honours these roots by combining the rich traditions of Brazilian coffee cultivation with a commitment to modern craftsmanship, authenticity, and excellence.

Every cup reflects our passion for exceptional coffee and the values passed down through generations. From the heart of Brazil to coffee lovers around the world, we are dedicated to delivering premium quality and sharing a story of heritage, dedication, and refinement that transcends borders.

What does “Uai” mean?

“Uai” is the most iconic word from Minas Gerais, Brazil—the home of some of the world's finest coffees. Mineiros (people from Minas Gerais) use it in everyday conversations to express surprise, curiosity, agreement, doubt, or simply as a natural part of speech. Depending on the context, it can mean anything from “well” and “really?” to “of course!”

The exact origin of “uai” remains a mystery. One popular theory links it to the English word “why,” brought by British miners who worked in Minas Gerais during the 19th century, while others believe it evolved from old Portuguese expressions. Whatever its origin, “uai” has become a symbol of the warm, welcoming spirit and unique culture of Minas Gerais.

At Uai Coffee, we proudly celebrate this heritage by bringing the flavours, traditions, and hospitality of Minas Gerais to every cup.
